2 Inclusions of Bamboo Unit Price

from the table given above, the quoted price for raw bamboo poles includes:

  • Harvesting: The cost of cutting the bamboo from the clump.

  • Basic Cleaning: Removal of small branches and leaves.

  • Sorting: Grouping of bamboo by size and species at the source.

3 Exclusions of Bamboo Unit Price

The following are things excluded in the unit price from the table above. Buyers should expect to pay extra for the following:

  • Treatment: The cost of treating the bamboo to protect it from pests (e.g., termites, powder-post beetles) and decay. Common treatments include boric acid solution or traditional smoking methods.

  • Delivery and Transportation: The cost of transporting the bamboo from the supplier to the buyer’s location. This can vary significantly based on distance and the volume of the order.

  • Taxes: Value Added Tax (VAT) may be applied to the final price.

  • Labor for Loading and Unloading: Additional manpower costs may be incurred.

4 Factors Affecting Bamboo Unit Price

Several factors can influence the price of bamboo in the Philippines:

  • Species: Different bamboo species have varying growth rates, culm thickness, and strength, which affects their price.

  • Size and Age: Longer, thicker, and more mature bamboo poles command higher prices due to their structural integrity.

  • Quality: High-quality bamboo with no cracks, insect damage, or discoloration is more expensive.

  • Treatment: Treated bamboo is more costly but offers longevity and durability.

  • Seasonality: Prices may fluctuate with the season. Harvesting is often preferred during the dry season, which can affect supply and price.

  • Supply and Demand: The availability of bamboo in a specific region and the current market demand play a significant role in pricing. Areas with abundant bamboo resources may have lower prices.

  • Government Regulations and Support: Policies related to the harvesting, transport, and sale of bamboo can impact its cost.

  • Proximity to Source: The farther the buyer is from the bamboo plantation or supplier, the higher the transportation costs, which adds to the overall price.

5 Considerations When Buying Bamboo

Before purchasing bamboo, it is essential to consider the following to ensure you get the best value for your needs:

  • Intended Use: Determine the specific application of the bamboo (e.g., structural, decorative, agricultural) to select the appropriate species and size.

  • Supplier Reputation: Source bamboo from reputable suppliers who can provide information on the species, age, and treatment of the bamboo.

  • Physical Inspection: Whenever possible, inspect the bamboo poles for any signs of damage, such as cracks, insect holes, or fungal growth. The bamboo should be mature, indicated by a less glossy and more faded green to yellowish color.

  • Moisture Content: For construction purposes, the bamboo should be properly dried to minimize shrinkage and cracking. The ideal moisture content is around 12-18%.

  • Treatment Verification: If purchasing treated bamboo, inquire about the treatment method used and ask for any certification or documentation.

  • Get Multiple Quotes: Compare prices from different suppliers to get a competitive rate. Be sure to clarify what is included and excluded in their quotes.

  • Understand the Species: Familiarize yourself with the characteristics of local bamboo species to ensure you are buying the right type for your project.
